Winterizing boat: off-season maintenance and care

The end of the boating season is the perfect time to perform preventive maintenance to ensure the good condition of your boat during the months of inactivity. Winterizing a boat correctly not only protects vital systems, such as the engine and marine gearboxes, it also prevents problems in the future.

1. Maintenance of the engine and gearboxes

• Change engine oil before storing. Old oil can contain contaminants and acids that damage internal engine parts during idle.
• Replace oil and fuel filters to start the next season with a clean system.
• Check the gearbox, check lubrication levels and look for possible leaks.
• Inspect belts and hoses for cracks or wear, and replace if necessary.
• Perform an engine compression test to make sure all cylinders are in good condition.
• Apply anti-corrosive to exposed metal parts and perform a complete system test before storage.
